5/29/2023 0 Comments The enchanted april review![]() Wisteria and sunshine are the main selling points mentioned in the ad the film similarly depends on those attractions, but it also has a welcome element of wit. The principals here are the tremulous Lottie (Josie Lawrence) and the meek, saddened Rose (Miranda Richardson), who are cowed by overbearing husbands and join forces to answer a newspaper advertisement offering the castle for rent. It helps that the same villa in Portofino where Miss von Armin wrote the novel has been used to fine effect as the film's principal setting. ![]() The ladies are well bred, the scenery is lovely and the dialogue is polished and polite. But it actually unfolds on what has come to be thought of as Merchant-Ivory-Forster territory. "Enchanted April" was directed by Mike Newell ("Dance With a Stranger") and based on a 1922 novel by Elizabeth von Armin. Each has changed visibly for the better by the time this soothing, picturesque film arrives at what is quite literally a rosy ending. The voyagers are four colorfully incompatible Englishwomen who all discover, to their delight, that travel can indeed be a broadening experience. "Enchanted April" revolves around the appealing notion that a trip to Italy, specifically to a medieval castle with a glorious view of the surrounding countryside, will cure any ills. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments Having and being had by eula biss![]() ![]() She retains firm control over her own lines of inquiry, but - fittingly for a critique of capitalism’s warped and warping individualism - she allows others to amplify or shape her thinking.Biss drives the story forward, but she isn’t alone at the wheel. But Biss takes that sense of collaboration further than most. It’s not uncommon for essayists to be 'in conversation' with writers (like Didion) who came before them. In both her scrutiny and her style, Biss implies that the only way to address our complicity is full transparency. What guides her writing is careful attention to language and behavior, cause and effect. She is not afraid to disclose personal details, but she isn’t writing memoir she is illustrating points. Biss’ works of nonfiction expand the definition of personal essays. If there is not an exact category for this type of book, that’s by design. This allows her to explore the candid ways we reveal our own biases around money, class, wealth, property and work. Loose in its greater arc but always tethered to an awareness of the insidious influence of capitalism, each essay originates in conversation or personal observation. A middle-age, middle-class white American writer and professor, Biss lays bare her own privilege from the start. ![]() Bliss enlivens her own critique of capital in the 2020s by delving into the trouble we all avoid discussing - and then staying with it. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Takaki later applied these questions to his scholarly endeavors, as evidenced in A Different Mirror, where he interrogates “how we know what we know” about American history.Īt the urging of his high school teacher, Takaki attended the College of Wooster in Ohio. While Takaki’s parents did not have much formal education, they valued leaning and enrolled Takaki at a private school.
