Ellen Hopkins utilizes this stylistic technique to bring to surface the dramatic conflicts, evocative thoughts, and deeper meanings of her works. Rhetorical techniques are used to create literary effect, often without regard to literal meaning. Hopkins employs a vast array of techniques to convey a connected theme in her novels Impulse, Burned, and Identical that in a harsh and unloving environment emerge those bold enough to survive in a harsh and unloving world. The setting, conflict, characterization, and motif of each story allow the reader to delve deeper into each work’s meaning, but this would not be possible without the use of various rhetorical techniques and structural diction.
